Successful uses of CALL technology

What I see as one of the greatest advantages of the use of CALL technology in campus based courses is that when employed in an efficient way, it can be used to maximize the time that students and teachers have together. One example is to make lectures available online, either in the shape of streamed videos or as podcasts. Ideally, this will give make it possible for more student – teacher interaction during the scheduled sessions. What do you see as the greatest advantages of CALL, and do you have some inspiring examples to share?

What’s a blog?

According to some definitions, a blog is essentially an online diary, which can be used to write up daily activities. Unlike a paper diary, however, it gives the others the opportunity to read the entries and to comment on them. From this line of argument follows that blog authors are seen as mainly being interested in distributing their private lives online.

What do you think about this definition? Does it correspond to your views of what a blog is? Do you blog yourself, and/or do you ask your students to? What is your definition of a blog?

Welcome to the EUROCALL virtual strand workshop!

This blog is for those participating in Session 1 in the virtual strand workshop.

As you know, the idea behind this workshop is for online participants as well as those physically present in Granada to get to try using the tools which will be employed in the virtual strand during the conference. Considering how many people have signed up for the virtual strand, there will probably be quite a few taking part today, and so the tools might be put to an interesting test. Do keep in mind that it will probably be a bit less crowded during the following days, as people most likely will not log on all at the same time.

The first thing we want you to do is to open the Blobber chat tab to the right (only available in IE5+). This channel will be used for real time interaction, and the workshop leaders will begin by giving you some more instructions there. You can also find the instructions in the conference wiki.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask in the chat! Hope you will enjoy participating in this workshop and meeting people with shared interests – whether in Granada or somewhere else in the world!
